Nigeria set to sack underperforming Keshi

14 October 2014, 19:00

Nairobi - An official from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has claimed that Stephen Keshi's reign as national-team coach is all but over.

Keshi is not currently contracted to the NFF after his deal expired at the end of the World Cup in Brazil, where the Super Eagles reached the round of 16.

However, the 52-year-old - who guided the country to their third AFCON success in 2013 in South Africa - was allowed to continue at the helm to oversee the start of their qualifying campaign for the 2015 edition in Morocco.

Things, though, have not gone according to plan, with Nigeria winless in Group A after three games, having lost to Congo and Sudan while drawing with South Africa.

The West African giants now need to win all their remaining qualifiers to stand a chance of featuring in Morocco next year.

And with a record that reads just one win in his last 11 outings, Keshi is expected to be given the axe in the coming days, according to an unnamed NFF official.

"The new NFF have already decided to sack Keshi and they are already shopping for a replacement for the coach," the official told African Football.

"What I cannot readily tell is whether it is with immediate effect or that will be after the Sudan reverse fixture on Wednesday as the games are too close to each other."
