New university sevens tournament kicks off

Nairobi - The Kenya Universities' Sports Association (Kusa) has believes that the
Kings of Rugby University Sevens tournament could herald a "new dawn"
for the sport.
The event will the nation’s best 12 university rugby teams battle it
out for a combined total of Sh225 000 in prize money later this month.
Boniface Salano, vice president of Kusa, said at the launch of the
event in Nairobi on Monday that the tournament would help develop the
“This is a new dawn for University rugby. We got a lot of talent at
this level but it’s not well catered for by the National Series,” the
Daily Nation reports Salano to have said.
“We want to engage more in developing their skills in sevens since before venturing into 15s version.”
The 12 sides have been separated into three groups for the opening stage of the tournament.
Group A contains top seeds Strathmore Leos, Catholic Monks, South Eastern University of Kenya and Moi University.
University of Nairobi’s Mean Machine are in Pool B along with
Daystar, Masinde Muliro and United States International University.
Group C contains Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad, Meru, Egerton and Mount Kenya.
The tournament will take place at the Rugby Football Union of East Africa grounds on November 29.
Salano said that future installments of the tournament will see the
tournament split up into different conferences around the country, with
the top 12 teams progressing to the finals.
