Nairobi - Despite making frantic efforts to send lists of their nominees for the overall Sports Personality of the Year Awards (Soya), many local sports federations’ candidates will not be considered to top award.
According to the Standard, Soya panel of judges, who confirmed receiving lists from cricket, basketball and volleyball among other sports disciplines requesting that their players be entered for the overall title, said it was too late as they had opted to go with the seven finalists they named last Friday.
The seven are: Olympic 800m record holder David Rudisha and Paralympics 800m record holder Abraham Tarbei, world marathon majors champion Mary Keitany, world 5,000m and 10,000m women’s champion Vivian Cheruiyot, who will also be defending the Soya title, Olympic 3,000m steeplechase champion Ezekiel Kemboi and Harambee Stars and Celtic FC midfielder Victor Wanyama.
