Mombasa stadium to get artificial turf

06 February 2014, 13:40

Mombasa - Mombasa County Stadium will get artificial turf after completion of the Phase Two of the renovation work.

This was disclosed by the Mombasa County Minister of Sports Hazel Koitaba when she received a delegation from the Parliamentary committee on Sports that paid a  visit  to inspect the stadium.

The minister revealed the county government is committed to providing a befitting sports complex.

‘’We plan to roll out phase two of the renovation where we shall upgrade the stadium by putting up an artificial turf and increase the capacity of the stadium  to accommodate 30,000-plus spectators’’

Once this is done, the minister said, the stadium shall be able to host Confederation of Africa Football(CAF) matches.

"At the moment we cannot host CAF matches because the stadium does not meet FIFA standards’’ she stated.

The Parliamentary committee is on a retreat in Mombasa to asses the progress made in the renovation of the stadium and intends to make  similar tours to Moi Stadium in Kisumu  and Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret. The delegation was accompanied by the commissioner of sports Gordon Oluoch.
