Man City determined to do better - Demichelis

24 November 2014, 20:57

Manchester - Manchester City centre-back Martin Demichelis said on Monday that his side will be motivated by previous Champions League disappointments when they tackle his former club Bayern Munich on Tuesday.

City will be eliminated at the group stage for the third time in four seasons if they fail to beat Bayern at the Etihad Stadium and there is a winner in the other Group E game between CSKA Moscow and Roma.

Demichelis, 33, is in only his second season at City, but he said that he and his team-mates feel a shared sense of responsibility to make amends for the club's recent failures in Europe's elite competition.

"It is not just the manager who is disappointed. We are not happy with our performances in the Champions League," said the Argentina international, who spent seven years at Bayern between 2003 and 2010.

"But we do have a very good squad and we really should do much better. There are two games left, and I'm sure we will play better. Why shouldn't we dream of going through to the last 16?

"We're all well aware tomorrow (Tuesday) will be a very tough game, playing against the best team in the Champions League.

"But if you look back at last season, when we played at Bayern, we were 2-0 down after 12 minutes and came back to win it (3-2), which shows what we can do.

"Tomorrow it's a question of being straight at it and putting in our best performance, looking to control the game and play with aggression."

Bayern are already guaranteed to qualify for the knockout phase as group winners, but Demichelis believes the German champions' mentality means their players will not contemplate slacking off.

"It is true I have a lot of experience there and it could help us that they have already qualified, but I know the German mentality is always the same," he told a pre-game media conference.

"Germans work as they think and I'm sure they'll come here to win. It won't be an easy task.

"It may be that they don't field their strongest starting XI, but they'll have the quality in the squad and the players on the bench to deal with that."

Despite having only taken two points from their first four games, it is still possible for City to reach the last 16 and manager Manuel Pellegrini says that no-one at the club has abandoned hope yet.

"I don't know who are those people that don't believe what we can do," said the Chilean, whose side visit Roma in the last round of matches.

"I am sure that this team, and me especially, we believe and we have a lot of trust that we can do it.

"So we'll see tomorrow after the game what happens. I hope we will continue having chances to the last game."
