Nairobi - In an unprecedented move, football league side, Abaluhya Football Club (AFC) Leopards announced plans to introduce a new debit card that will offer its fans multiple benefits beginning next year.
According to officials, the offering will be named the Ingwe Debit Card. Ingwe is the vernacular Luhya for leopard.
The card’s production will be in partnership with a local bank, a mobile network operator and solutions provider, which the club could not name as it said it would be premature at this stage.
The card will have multiple benefits to AFC fans who will use it for purchasing merchandise in all the club’s outlets upon which they will earn points after every purchase.
The points would be redeemed for tickets for the club matches or for acquisition of other merchandise.
It will also be possible to get information updates on the coming matches, transfers and scores of the team.
AFC Leopards has one of the largest fan bases in the country having been in existence for close to 50 years.
The move to introduce the card is viewed as a strategy to increase the clubs fan base that has been dwindling over the years due to poor results and management wrangles.
Commonly known as Ingwe, Leopards, the Nairobi-based Leopards was founded in 1964. Like its rivals Gor Mahia, the side has won the Kenyan Premier League a record 13 times.
