Late win lifts Mathare spirits

07 August 2014, 15:10

Nairobi - A late win over Bandari has lifted spirits at Mathare United, head coach Stanley Okumbi says.

The Slum Boys sneaked to a 1-0 win over the dockers Tuesday, thanks to a late goal from Noah Abich off the penalty spot in the last minute of injury time in the Kenyan Premier League Wednesday.

Okumbi says that the win, which sees Mathare increase the gap between themselves and the relegation places to 11 points, has given them some impetus.

" It was a relieving win. We knew before kick-off that we had to win the game to give ourselves a cushion and we are happy that we managed that, he said.

" We know that we have 10 games left to play and if we are consistent in our play, I am confident we will finish the season well, he added.

Mathare have 26 points, with second bottom KCB on 15, though they have a game in hand.
