Late Parker goal gives champions Chiefs win

30 April 2015, 10:26

Johannesburg - Bafana Bafana forward Bernard Parker scored deep in stoppage time to give South African champions Kaizer Chiefs a 1-0 win at Mamelodi Sundowns Wednesday in a top-of-the-table clash.

A couple of defenders failed to clear a low cross and Parker claimed his seventh Premiership goal of the season by poking the ball past Uganda goalkeeper Denis Onyango.

It was the fifth league victory in a row for Chiefs, who clinched the title last Wednesday by banging four goals past mid-table Polokwane City.

But defeat for Sundowns at Lucas 'Masterpieces' Moripe Stadium in a Pretoria township extended the winless run of the 2014 champions to four matches.

And the loss saw them slip to third behind former African champions Orlando Pirates on goal difference with three matches to play.

The runners-up join Chiefs in the 2016 CAF Champions League, the elite African club competition.

Pirates came from behind to wallop SuperSport United 4-1 in Soweto and complete a miserable five days for the Pretoria outfit, who lost a South African FA Cup semi-final at the weekend.

Menzi Masuku bagged a brace for the Buccaneers and Kermit Erasmus and Sifiso Myeni also scored.

AmaZulu and Moroka Swallows both drew and remain level on 24 points at the wrong end of the standings.

Resurgent Platinum Stars held AmaZulu 0-0 in Durban while Swallows once again failed to hold a lead as they drew 1-1 at Pretoria University.

The bottom club is automatically relegated and the second-last team goes into play-offs with two second-division sides for a single Premiership slot next season.
