Kenya's youngsters spring COSAFA surprise

09 December 2013, 15:39

Nairobi - Kenya, a non-member of the Confederation of Southern African Football Association (COSAFA) community, has been the surprise package of the ongoing Under 20 Youth Championships.

The East African side tops Group A ahead of the hosts - Lesotho.

Kenya, who are in a group that also includes Comoros and Mauritius, lead the group with four points from their two opening matches.

The points guarantee them qualification for the semi-final while second placed Lesotho needs at least a win and a draw to join Kenya.

Meanwhile, the COSAFA Under 20 Championships started last week with 13 nations competing for the prime junior football championship in Southern Africa.

Angola, South Africa and Zimbabwe have already booked semi-final positions following their impressive victories in their group stages.

Zimbabwe led Group D with back-to-back victories against Swaziland and Botswana.

The Young Warriors, as Zimbabwe are affectionately known in football circles, massacred Botswana 3-0 before beating Swaziland 2-1.

On the other hand, Angola are leading Group B with six points in their two opening matches.

South Africa beat the holders Zambia to book a berth in the semifinals.
