Kenya confirmed CHAN 2018 hosts

24 February 2014, 14:07

Nairobi - Kenya will host the 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN), the Confederation of African Football has confirmed.

This follows a meeting of the CAF Executive committee under the leadership of President, Issa Hayatou, at the CAF Headquarters in Cairo, Egypt last Friday.

“The CAF Executive Committee has designated Kenya as host of the 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN), following receipt of necessary government guarantees and complete dossier including the required infrastructure and security,” the football governing body stated in a document made available to this agency on Monday.

The CHAN tournament, which features footballers plying their trade in the domestic leagues, would arguably be the biggest sporting event the country would have hosted.

Kenya was initially scheduled to host the CAF Africa Cup of Nations in 1996 but lost the rights owing to inadequate preparations.

The tournament was eventually handed to South Africa who eventually won it.

Ironically, the last CHAN edition was played in South Africa recently.

The next such tournament is scheduled for Morocco in 2015.

Meanwhile, CAF lauded South Africa for a successful CHAN event.

“The CAF Executive Committee thanked His Excellency Jacob Zuma, President of the Republic of South Africa and his Government, the Local Organising Committee and the South Africa Football Association (SAFA) for the excellent organization of the tournament, which served a rendezvous of African football. On behalf of the family of Mr. Nelson Mandela, President of the Local Organizing Committee and the President of the Federation of South African Football Association (SAFA) also thanked the President of CAF and its Executive Committee for tribute paid to Mr. Nelson Mandela during each match of the tournament, as well as the visit to his family with the President of FIFA, Joseph Sepp Blatter,” CAF stated.
