Kane urges Tottenham to harness cup momentum

30 January 2015, 11:41

London - On a high after reaching the League Cup final in mid-week, Tottenham Hotspur begin an important run of Premier League fixtures on Saturday with a game at West Bromwich Albion.

An 87th-minute goal from Christian Eriksen at Sheffield United on Wednesday night saw Mauricio Pochettino's side through to the final of the League Cup at the third-tier club's expense.

That booked them a Wembley date with Chelsea on March 1, part of a sequence of matches that also includes a home-and-away showdown in the Europa League with Fiorentina.

Victory in this year's Europa League will yield a place in the Champions League, but with the trip to The Hawthorns offering an opportunity to leapfrog fifth-place Arsenal, who play on Sunday, Spurs are alive and kicking in the fight to secure qualification via the league.

"We're going to enjoy this moment now, but we know we're back on it on Saturday," said striker Harry Kane, Spurs' England Under-21 striker, who has 18 goals to his name this season.

"We've got an important game so we want to take this momentum and push on up the league."

Much of Tottenham's recent success has been built on goals by Eriksen, whose habit of deciding games late on will not have gone unnoticed by West Brom manager Tony Pulis.

The Denmark international claimed a brace at Sheffield United and has now scored decisive goals in the last three minutes of a match four times in his last 16 appearances.

 McManaman set for debut

"We always do everything the hard way at Tottenham, so we have not changed anything there, but the man again popped up at the end," said Spurs full-back Kyle Walker.

"He keeps doing it time and time again. When he gets there, you put your house on him. It is very rare that he scuffs it or misses. He can keep doing it for me, every week."

West Brom have added Callum McManaman to their squad in time for the game and Pulis said he believed the winger, who signed from Championship side Wigan Athletic, had a "point to prove".

McManaman was one of the stars of the Wigan team who stunned Manchester City in the FA Cup final in 2013, shortly before dropping out of the Premier League.

"We spent a lot of time chasing him and we're pleased," Pulis said. "He's got good ability and can score goals and we need people who can help us in the final third. He is proven at this level.

"I like having wide players in the team and I think the crowd like individual players who can take players on. We had it with Jermaine Pennant and Matt Etherington at Stoke and Yannick Bolasie and Jason Puncheon at Crystal Palace.

"Callum has something to prove, which is brilliant. He has been out of the Premier League for a couple of years and he is desperate get back into it."

Defender Jonas Olsson has returned to training following an Achilles problem, but will not be available in time to face Spurs.
