Gor Mahia lead the way in congested KPL

25 April 2014, 11:37

Nairobi - Defending champions of the Kenyan Premier League KPL Gor Mahia have, for the first time this season, shot straight to top spot in the log following their 3-0 drubbing of hapless Muhoroni Youth at Nairobi City Stadium.

Gor Mahia displaced the then log leaders - Tusker Football Club, who narrowly lost 0-1 to Chemelil Sugar courtesy of a solitary goal by Innocent Wafula in the dying moments of the game played at at Ruaraka Stadium.

Gor are now leading the 16-team league log standing with 20 points from 10 games played so far.

The then early log leaders Tusker have been displaced to the third position following their defeat by Chemelil Sugar, who eventually occupied the second spot.

Chemelil Sugar are on second spot with 18 points from 10 games played while third placed Tusker share the same number of points, but are on third position by goal difference.

Former champions AFC Leopards are 11th on the log with 11 points from 10 games played to date, a development that left them with slim chances of claiming this year's premiership title.

While AFC Leopards are battling to put their house in order, the top 10 clubs in KPL ahead of the weekend comprise Gor Mahia, Chemelil Sugar, Tusker, Sofapaka, Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), Thika United, Sony Sugar, Western Stima, Muhoroni Youth and Bandari FC.

Clubs struggling to escape the relegation at the end of the season will feature former champions AFC Leopards on 11th position while City Stars  are on 12th position with 11 points followed by Ulinzi Stars with 10 points from 10 matches, Mathare United, KCB and Top Fry Nakuru    anchoring the log with four points from 10 games.

While most pundits ruled out Gor from retaining their championship, the Kenyan football giants proved everyone wrong as they lifted their spirit to claim the top spot.
