Gor, Leopards seek league redemption

05 June 2014, 11:44

Nairobi - After an abortive campaign in the Top Eight tournament, Gor Mahia faces an uphill task to ensure they finish the season with silverware.

Following their 2-1 overall defeat at the hands of Tusker Football Club on Wednesday at Nairobi City Stadium, Gor are now turning their focus on defending the Kenya Premier League (KPL) title as well as the GOtv Shield.

That mission to defend the premiership title resumes with a crucial assignment against arch-rivals AFC Leopards at the Nairobi City Stadium on Sunday, in what is billed as the clash of the season.

They face a formidable task, coming against a side that is licking its wounds after they lost the Council for East and Central African Football Associations (CECAFA) Nile Basin Cup by a whisker following a 2-1 defeat in the final to Uganda's Sports Club Victoria University on Wednesday.

Leopards, will similarly be seeking redemption in the league.

Having maintained their 100 percent record in the CECAFA Nile Basin tournament, Leopards finally succumbed where it mattered most when it appeared certain the Kenyan side would easily walk away with the football title.

Sunday's premiership encounter between the two sides will revoke the old rivalry in a match that is likely to go either way.

Gor lead the 16-team league log with 29 points from 13 games while Leopards lie 11th.

Elsewhere on Friday, Western Stima will host Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) in the only Premiership match of the day.

KRA are placed third on the log standing while their rivals are a distant 10th position.

On Saturday, Thika United will host City Stars in another crucial league encounter expected to go either way while Ulinzi Stars host unpredictable Sony Sugar.

Other premiership league matches lined-up for Sunday pit Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) against Sofapaka while Muhoroni Youth host log anchors Top Fry Nakuru.
