Nairobi - Kenya Premier league match between arch rivals Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards came to a standstill for almost seven minutes after fans of the two teams clashed on Sunday.
Chaos erupted at Nyayo National Stadium, Nairobi minutes after Gor Mahia striker Dan Sserunkuma scored the lone goal that gave his team victory against Leopards.
With AFC Leopards fans seeing no hope of equalizing the score, they began to throw stones, sticks and bottles to their Gor counterparts. They engaged in running battles leaving several injured.
Police were forced to use tear gas canisters to disperse the fans that had turned rowdy.
Players and match officials grabbed water bottles in the pitch and washed their face to get rid of tear gas from their eyes.
Gor Mahia coach Zradvko Logarusic led his players to calm down their fans who heeded to the call until the match was over.
The incident comes a few days after Sports Stadia Management Board (SSMB) had lifted a ban imposed on AFC Leopards after their fans caused chaos during their Top 8 match against Chemelil Sugar at the same venue.
According to SSMB, Leopards said they were willing to pay for the damages caused at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani and Nyayo Stadium and even showed them a detailed security plan.
