GDS welcomed by players

19 August 2013, 18:22

London - The much-vaunted goal-line technology (GDS) was given a wholesale nod of approval after it was called into action in two games on the first weekend of Premier League action.

Having been installed for the Community Shield the previous weekend, it will be in operation at all 20 Premier League grounds to rule whether the ball has crossed the line.

The Daily Mail used the headline: "Hallelujah, it works" while one of the players involved, Kevin de Bruyne, said it had worked well.

A header from Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic was saved on the line at the second attempt by Hull goalkeeper Allan McGregor in injury time in their match on Sunday at Stamford Bridge.

"It was clearly not over the line," De Bruyne told Sky Sports.

"The technology is good so there will be no questions further."

The technology was belatedly introduced this season, three years after Frank Lampard had a goal for England ruled out against Germany, even though replays showed it was well over the line.

It was first used in a Premier League match on Saturday during the match between Arsenal and Aston Villa when Fabian Delph's shot hit the post and rolled along the line.
