Football: Fluminense sack Luxemburgo

12 November 2013, 17:12

Rio de Janeiro - Former Real Madrid and Brazil boss Vanderlei Luxemburgo has been sacked as coach of 2012 Brazilian champions Fluminense, club president Peter Siemsen said in a statement on Tuesday.

Luxemburgo, 61, who was appointed in July, will be replaced by former Flamengo and Vasco da Gama coach Dorival Junior, 51, who has been given a contract until the end of the year.

Luxemburgo had overseen a run of nine matches without a win as the title-holders were hit by a string of injuries to some of their top players.

The Rio de Janeiro-based club are at risk of relegation, currently lying 18th in the 20-team league with five matches remaining.

Luxemburgo was sacked after just six months with Real Madrid in 2005 but has won five Brazilian titles with four different clubs - Palmeiras (1993, 1994), Corinthians (1998), Cruzeiro (2003) and Santos (2004).

He coached Brazil from 1998 to 2000, winning the Copa America in 1999.

Dorival won the Brazilian Cup with Santos in 2010 as well as titles with Figueirense, Sport Recife, Coritiba and Internacional.
