Fans heap praise on Gor, Leopards

18 February 2014, 10:25

Nairobi - Football fans hailed Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards for booking their berths in the next stage of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) competitions.

A snap survey established that Kenyans were confident the clubs could progress further.

Orange CAF Champions League representatives, Gor Mahia, beat Gabon's US Bitam 4-2 on penalties while Leopards dismissed Ethiopia's Defence 2-1 in a Confederations Cup match at the National Stadium in Ethiopia.

“When the two sides, particularly Gor Mahia flew out of the country to play in the jungles of Gabon and Ethiopia, I completely ruled them out of qualification to the next round but when I read the news on Monday, I was equally shocked to see that both had pulled through,” Martin Onyango said.

Eugene Kapchanga said while he had never supported football at club level but the national team, he would now follow the two clubs that made the country proud.

“Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards raised Kenya's flag up above there! Indeed, the two soccer clubs became our football ambassadors. I never supported individual clubs for Kenya, but the resilience shown by the two clubs made me notice their sterling performance. While the two clubs fought for their own cause, they also lifted up the country's name in as far as football is concerned in Africa. I salute both Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards," Kapchanga said.

Stephen Karanja also thanked the two premiership sides.

“Usually, it is tough to play away from home and come back victorious! I salute the spirit of resilience shown by the two clubs. I guess this is the turning point for Kenyan football history,” Karanja said.
