Essien next to face the music

03 July 2014, 14:10

Nairobi - Michael Essien could become the third member of Ghana's World Cup squad to face action from their FA over his conduct at the tournament.

Kevin-Prince Boateng and Sulley Muntari have been banned indefinitely by Ghana's governing body after the duo were sent home from Brazil for disciplinary reasons.

The Black Stars finished bottom of Group G, having kicked off their World Cup adventure with a 2-1 defeat to the USA before holding Germany to a creditable 2-2 draw.

However, their competition ended in disappointment as Kwesi Appiah's side lost 2-1 to Portugal, with Boateng and Muntari expelled prior to the encounter.

Essien had been benched for the third time in the tournament, and Appiah noted that the AC Milan player was not participating in the warm-up session in the lead-up to kick-off.

Appiah confirmed at a press conference in Accra that he has reported the incident to his national team's bosses.

He said: "I was notified by my technical team that he [Essien] did not warm up though he was supposed to. That was some minutes before kick off against Portugal.

"Due to the urgency of the game, we had to carry on and after that I reported his conduct to the GFA in my report for the necessary action to be taken."
