Enyeama: Cancel AFCON

24 October 2014, 16:12

Nairobi - Vincent Enyeama has added his voice to the debate surrounding the possible postponement of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations because of the Ebola virus.

The deadly virus has claimed thousands of lives in West Africa, which prompted would-be hosts Morocco to withdraw their commitment for the tournament.

The Confederations of African Football are thus considering alternative options to host, but there have not been any takers thus far.

Enyeama has pleaded with the continental football body to consider canceling AFCON 2015 all together in order to minimise the risk of the virus spreading.

"I really wish it (AFCON) doesn't happen with all the people that will be moving around," the Super Eagles captain told reporters after Lille's 0-0 draw with Everton in the Europa League on Thursday.

"But I'm not CAF. I'm not the one who calls the shots.

"It's risky for everyone because you go to Africa and then everyone is hugging you and shaking you, and what can you do? You're at risk.

"But if it happens I will play, if we qualify," he added.

Nigeria, the defending champions, are currently outside of an automatic AFCON qualifying place and have to win both of their matches to have a chance of qualifying.
