Egypt, Guinea climb FIFA rankings

13 March 2014, 15:41

Johannesburg - Egypt and Guinea were the main climbers when the FIFA-CAF March national team rankings were released Thursday.

The Pharaohs rose two places to third and the Syli Nationale (National Elephant) two places to ninth after friendly victories over 2014 World Cup qualifiers last week.

Ivory Coast maintained top spot ahead of Algeria.

Egypt defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 in Austrian city Innsbruck to give coach Shawky Gharib a winning start as successor to American Bob Bradley.

Guinea overcame Iran 2-1 in Tehran, providing a timely boost to Michel Dussuyer, a French coach recently given a new contract after previously being told it would not be renewed.

Nigeria were another top-10 side to climb, rising from eighth place to seventh on the back of a 0-0 draw with fellow World Cup qualifiers Mexico in American city Atlanta.

Other top-10 nations Cape Verde Islands, Ghana, Cameroon and Mali all slipped one place while South Africa remained 12th despite a 5-0 home pasting from Brazil.
