De Gea warned over Real move

22 May 2015, 12:50

Cape Town - Paul Scholes has warned Manchester United's star goalkeeper David De Gea that the grass may not be greener over at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Writing in his Independent column, Scholes praised De Gea for coming of age at the club after initially struggling upon arrival from Atletico Madrid.

Scholes revealed that when the fresh-faced 20-year-old arrived at Old Trafford, he was "concerned about his suitability to play in goal for United". Scholes said that his confidence was hit early and it took him a while to reach the United standards.

"The problem is, now he is the finished article, it looks like United will lose him." wrote Scholes.

Manchester United face an uphill battle to convince David De Gea to snub the advances of Real Madrid. The lure of returning home to his friends and family and the chance to become a legend at Real Madrid seem too much for De Gea to resist but Scholes believes the talented shot-stopper should exercise some caution before making his decision.

"It looks to me that Iker Casillas is not yet ready to step down as the No 1 at Madrid, and you could hardly imagine a more successful, well-established goalkeeper than the man who has won everything for club and country. At United, David is the undisputed No 1. He is loved by the supporters and valued by his team-mates. It might not be quite so smooth at Madrid."

Scholes says that if De Gea does indeed depart then Petr Cech should be the club's number one target.

The 33-year-old Chelsea legend will be allowed to leave in the summer.

A move for Cech will be similar to when Manchester United brought Dutch goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar to the club. Van der Sar was 35 when he signed from Fulham.

Speaking on the possibility of signing Cech. Scholes wrote: "He could potentially play another six years for United. There would be no concern about having to give him time to play his way into the position or the demands that the Premier League makes of a goalkeeper new to the country. United won’t want to lose De Gea but there is a solution in the offing."
