Confed Cup referees chosen

13 May 2013, 17:03

Berlin - Football world governing body FIFA Monday selected 10 referees to officiate at the Confederations Cup in Brazil next month.

They include England's Howard Webb, who refereed the 2010 World Cup final between Spain and the Netherlands and the 2010 Champions League final.

Webb, who also officiated at Euro 2008 and Euro 2012 as well as the 2009 Confederations Cup in South Africa, will be joined by his regular assistants Michael Mullarkey and Darren Cann.

Webb is one of four European referees chosen, alongside Bjorn Kuipers of the Netherlands, Pedro Proenca Oliveira Alves Garcia of Portugal, and Felix Brych of Germany.

The other referees are: Ravshan Irmatov (Uzbekistan), Yuichi Nishimura (Japan), Djamel Haimoudi (Algeria), Joel Antonio Aguilar Chicas (El Salvador), Diego Hernan Abal (Argentina) and Enrique Roberto Oses Zencovich (Chile).

A total of 20 assistant referees join the main match officials. Candidates have been under the guidance and supervision of former FIFA referee Massimo Busacca, now head of refereeing of the body, and are candidates for the World Cup in 2014, Busacca said.

The Confederations Cup, which kicks off in Brasilia on June 15 and runs to June 30, will also feature goal-line technology for the first time at a major international tournament after its successful implementation at the 2012 Club World Cup in Japan.

The tournament will be held at six World Cup venues and comprises world and European champions Spain, Euro 2012 runners-up Italy, South American champions Uruguay, World Cup hosts Brazil, North and Central America and Caribbean champions Mexico, Asian champions Japan, African champions Nigeria and Oceania champions Tahiti.
