Chemelil can win KPL title

16 September 2014, 14:29

Nairobi - Former Gor Mahia player Goro Oronge thinks the race for this year's Kenya Premier League title is still wide open.

Chemelil are currently fourth in the league standings, just two points behind Sofapaka and Gor Mahia, who are currently on 43 points.

Oronge said the fact that Gor Mahia had two matches in hand was of little consequence, given the quality of all the teams contesting this year's league.

Oronge thinks Gor are still capable of slipping up and expects Chemelil to exploit that as the season draws closer towards its business end.

"At the moment, Chemelil need the kind of support l saw Western Stima receive last Saturday during their KPL fixture against AFC Leopards at Moi Stadium, Kisumu," Oronge told the Standard this week.

However, Oronge does feel that there are elements to the team's game which will need to be addressed if the season objectives are to be realised and chief among them, is the ability to not just create goalscoring opportunities but also to convert them.

"During my days in Gor under the then head coach Len Julians, virtually every player could score. It was not a case of individual players trying to shine and earn credit but winning those days had everything to do with teamwork and a good goal-scoring system in place," said Oronge, who felt this was an aspect that all clubs were struggling with this term.

Equally confident about Chemelil's prospects of winning this year's league title is club chairman Robert Nyakundi.

"The top KPL title contenders should know that Chemelil will settle for nothing less than the league title after registering an unprecedented unbeaten record in more than 10 matches and losing only three matches out of 24," said a confident Nyakundi.
