Cameroon search for fulltime coach

26 April 2013, 12:47

Yaoundé -  A number of high-profile figures, including former England boss Sven-Goran Erikkson, are being considered for the job of Cameroon coach, the country's football federation has revealed.

Cameroon football federation (Fecafoot) spokesman Junior Binyam told AFP on Thursday night that they had received more than 100 applications to become the next manager of the Indomitable Lions.

Binyam said a number of domestic coaches had applied but several well-known names were also in the running.

They include former Paris Saint-Germain player and coach Luis Fernandez, ex-England boss Eriksson, the current DR Congo manager Claude Le Roy and the former France coach Roger Lemerre.

Eriksson was in charge of Ivory Coast at the 2010 World Cup, Lemerre guided hosts Tunisia to the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations title while Le Roy previously led cameroon to glory in the same competition in 1988 in Morocco.

A short-list of three will be drawn up and sent to the country's sports minister for a choice to be made, Binyam added.

The four-time Africa Cup of Nations winners are currently managed on an interim basis by Jean-Paul Akono. He was appointed in September last year to replace French manager Denis Lavagne, who was sacked.

But Akono told the BBC on Thursday that he would not apply for the job on a permanent basis as the post was advertised without his knowledge.

The former player said he was "shocked and embarrassed" when he heard on state radio that the federation was looking for his successor, as he had been in talks with the government for a fulltime contract.
