Cabaye disillusioned at part-time PSG role

08 October 2014, 22:57

Paris - France midfielder Yohan Cabaye has had mixed fortunes since leaving Newcastle United for Paris Saint-Germain in January and has admitted his frustration at his lack of playing time at the Parc des Princes.

The 28-year-old former Lille player returned to France for a fee of around 20 million euros (16.5m pounds, $27.3m) and helped PSG win the Ligue 1 title and the League Cup last season.

He enjoyed a successful World Cup, helping France reach the quarter-finals in Brazil, where they were narrowly beaten by eventual winners Germany, but has started just four times so far this season for Laurent Blanc's PSG side.

Called up by Didier Deschamps to the France squad for Saturday's friendly against Portugal at the Stade de France, Cabaye hopes his international form will inspire a change of fortune at club level.

"I need to play, that's for sure. But when I'm on the pitch, as soon as things don't go quite so well, I get the impression that I am replaced immediately," Cabaye told sports daily L'Equipe on Wednesday.

"I know the coaching staff have decisions to make and I respect that, so I tell myself that I have to be really good on the pitch to play the next match.

"I don't want to lose confidence. We had a great World Cup in which I participated but a coach is in place (Blanc) and I have to respect his decisions. I have strong character and the goal is to show on the pitch what I'm capable of doing."

After making his mark with northern club Lille, with whom he won the Ligue 1 and French Cup double in 2011 under current Roma boss Rudi Garcia, Cabaye spent two and a half seasons with Newcastle where he was idolised by the Magpies faithful.

But he has never been given an extended opportunity to impress in Paris as he fights with France team-mate Blaise Matuidi, the in-form Argentine Javier Pastore and Italian duo Marco Verratti and Thiago Motta for a place in the side.

"I am not at the beginning of my career and I'm not going to start changing my game now," continued Cabaye, who also admitted to sleepless nights over his predicament.

"It's the first time I've been in this situation and I'm not complaining, the only thing I can do is show what I'm capable of, but at times, yes, it's not easy.

"I really don't have any room for error but that's football and that's PSG, who have become a big club," he added with a touch of nostalgia towards his playing days in England.

"Yes I think about it (England) but I quickly try to take those thoughts out of my head because it isn't taking me anywhere and can just make things worse.

"And when I'm at the Parc (des Princes), I feel the atmosphere there again. I like the stadium, the fans and the fantastic pitch there.

"My club situation is quite delicate but to play for France against Portugal is no small thing. It's up to me now to be at the right level.
