CSKA set for tough Roma visit - Slutsky

24 November 2014, 19:01

Moscow - Russian champions CSKA Moscow head coach Leonid Slutsky is anticipating a tough Champions League clash on Tuesday against Serie A side AS Roma.

"Our first meeting with Roma showed us they are a really strong team," Slutsky told a news conference.

CSKA lost their Champions League campaign-opener with the Italians 5-1 in September.

"Tuesday's match will show whether we've done our home work good enough ahead of the return encounter," he added.

"The match with Roma is without doubt very important for us. We still have a chance to make it through and we must do our best to capitalise on these chances."

Slutsky added that the absence of some of Roma's key players is unlikely to dramatically change the situation for his team.

"The absence of Maicon and (Vasilis) Torosidis will unlikely affect seriously our tactics for this match," Slutsky said.

"We experience certain problems with our defensive midfield line and are currently racking our brains over it. I think we'll take the final decision on Tuesday."

CSKA defender Alexei Berezutsky, who also attended the news conference, said he believed that Tuesday's match would be completely different than the two teams' previous meeting in September.

"Any team can suffer a thrashing," he said. "Just remember, Roma also conceded seven goals in the match with Bayern this season."

"Meanwhile, we displayed a much more stout defensive performance in the other Champions League matches. I'm confident that on Tuesday everything will be completely different. We are set to battle for a place in the knockout stage up to the very end."
