CECAFA draw conducted

Nairobi - Sixteen top African football clubs, among them AFC Leopards will battle out in the East and Central African Championship (CECAFA) tournament set for May 22.

The CECAFA Championship, the biggest regional club tournament in the region, will see top country club representatives compete in what is dubbed CECAFA Nile Basin pitting representatives from nations comprising Kenya, Tanzania, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, Uganda and Zanzibar

Also competing will be clubs from Burundi, Djibouti, Egypt, Ethiopia and Rwanda.

Speaking at the draw in Kenya, CECAFA Secretary General, Nicholas Musonye, said the tournament was aimed at improving football competition within the region.

“I want the teams to take advantage of this tournament to improve on their competitiveness. We want our (CECAFA) national teams to go to the highest levels of the Africa Cup of Nations next year and we cannot do that if our clubs are not strong enough," Musonye said.

He said there was lucrative prizes for winners with the tournament's champions walking away with Sh 2,6million, runners-up would pocket Sh 1,
72 million  while the third-placed winners will bank Sh 860 000.
