Nairobi - The Central and East African Football Associations (CECAFA) Senior Challenge has received a major boost after UAP Insurance Company committed KES 5 million (more than US$57.5) for the players’ insurance throughout the tournament.
Some of the funds would be used to facilitate activities during the 12-team tournament.
After initially struggling for sponsorship, CECAFA recently announced that GOtv would be the title sponsors of the tournament, having committed KES11.25 million towards the organization of the event and a further KES 45 million towards the broadcasting of all 26 matches.
Beverage firm, Coca-Cola committed Ksh6.5 million.
Meanwhile, organisers are confident fans will turn out in numbers for the tournament, which was scheduled to kick off on Wednesday with the hosts playing Ethiopia.
The last tournament the country hosted faced a serious challenge of low turnout.
“We are ready and prepared, equal to the task of organizing a very successful tournament from Wednesday,” said an official from the organizing committee.
“We should embark on a very serious marketing plan that shall cover all the 12 member countries of CECAFA,” he added.
