CAF confirm AFCON 2017 bids

07 October 2014, 15:59

Nairobi - The Confederation of African Football have announced that seven bids have been received for the hosting rights of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.

The bidding process opened on August 23, following the withdrawal of Libya as the original host of the 31st edition, because of political instability.

Several countries expressed interest and some canvassed for co-bidding, but only Algeria, Egypt, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Sudan and Zimbabwe submitted their applications by the deadline of Tuesday, September 30.

According to a statement from CAF, the host nation will be decided by the CAF executive committee during one of its sessions in 2015.

CAF emphasized that due to the limited time frame for the organization of AFCON 2017, the committee will focus on the host with acceptable infrastructure and facilities required in making a decision.
