'Bizarre' club forced into name change in Mombasa

Mombasa - Barely one
week after earning promotion to the South coast provincial league, Mombasa based
'Mamluki' football club has been ordered by Football Kenya Federation South coast
branch to change its present name.
federation shall not accept the name of Mamluki which is offensive and associated
with the criminal underworld‘’ said Branch vice chairman Ismael ‘Ogolla’ Mohammed.
“The bizarre trend that has seen youth name their football teams
after criminals is very surprising,” Ismael
Mamluki, a Swahili
word for mercenaries is closely associated with the disgraced Armenian mercenaries,
Magaryan and Artur Sargasyan who were linked to drug trafficking and which led them to being deported from Kenya.
FC are pooled in zone D of the south coast league and kick off their
