'Bizarre' club forced into name change in Mombasa

19 February 2014, 16:00

Mombasa - Barely one week after earning promotion to the South coast provincial league, Mombasa based 'Mamluki' football club has been ordered by Football Kenya Federation South coast branch to change its present name.

‘’The federation shall not accept the name of Mamluki which is offensive and associated with the criminal underworld‘’ said Branch vice chairman Ismael ‘Ogolla’ Mohammed.

“The bizarre trend that has seen youth name their football teams after criminals is very surprising,” Ismael further lamented.

Mamluki, a Swahili word for mercenaries is closely associated with the disgraced Armenian mercenaries, Artur Magaryan and Artur Sargasyan who were linked to drug trafficking and which led them to being deported from Kenya.

Mamluki FC are pooled in zone D of the south coast league and kick off their campaign with a date against Mende FC at Peleleza ground on March 1'st, 2014.
