Algeria president calls for repeat of 1982 World Cup win

30 June 2014, 17:20

Algiers - Algeria's ailing president Abdelaziz Bouteflika urged the country's World Cup team to repeat a landmark 1982 triumph over Germany when they clash on Monday.

Algeria beat Germany 2-1 32 years ago but the latest match is also tinged with revenge for the way Germany contributed to the North African country's elimination in 1982.

"I cannot imagine that you are unable to repeat the feat of your predecessors," Bouteflika said in a statement, with country already celebrating reaching the World Cup last 16 for the first time.

Algeria's unprecedented progress to the knockout stages "is just a first step (which) calls for other lines to be crossed to snatch the final victory and raise the colours of your country in the Brazilian sky," Bouteflika said.

It is the fourth time that the Algerian president, whose chronic health problems have prevented him from appearing in public, has addressed the national team at the tournament.

Algeria beat West Germany in the group stages in Spain. But they were eliminated when the Germans played out a 1-0 win against Austria that ensured the European neighbours qualified for the second round. The match is known as football's "game of shame."

Germany have played Algeria twice before -- at the World Cup in 1982 and in a 1964 friendly -- and lost both games.
