AFCON warning for gamblers

06 February 2013, 09:29

Johannesburg - Gamblers have been warned to look out for unscrupulous gambling operators during the African Cup of Nations soccer tournament in South Africa.

This would ensure that they did not unnecessarily lose their money through gambling, said National Gambling Board CEO Baby Tyawa.

"While sport betting is legal, those gambling still need to ensure that they use reputable organisations, and be on the lookout for those companies that may be involved in illegal activities," he said.

The board was working closely with several gambling establishments and the National Responsible Gambling Programme (NRGP) during the soccer tournament to raise awareness of dangers related to gambling.

Tyawa said that, like any other activity, gambling had rules with which experienced and aspirant gamblers needed to familiarise themselves.

"Let me hasten to indicate that we tend to receive lots of complaints about unfair play or betting during this period."

She said the problem mainly stemmed from people's failure to familiarise themselves with the rules of betting.

Gamblers were urged to contact the board if they are not sure about the legitimacy of any gambling institution or website.
