AFC Leopards squad unfit, says Logarusic

24 February 2015, 18:47

Nairobi - New AFC Leopards coach Zdravko Logarusic has blamed an erratic pre-season for his squad's poor fitness levels.

The Croatian only arrived at the club a week ago and the Kenyan Premier League outfit did not make a particularly good impression.

His initial assessment of the squad is that some players could need as much as two months to reach a similar level of fitness to other teams in the league.

"I came and found most of the players have been skipping training. Some have been training irregularly.

"They are unfit. It will take them like seven weeks of training to be fully fit," the 53 year old told the Playback show on SuperSport.

"It is like we are now starting our pre-season and using the Kenyan Premier League matches as pre-season matches. It's unfortunate, and unacceptable," added the former Gor Mahia coach.

His first game in charge resulted in a dull draw against Chemelil Sugar and Zdravko is certain it is purely down to the poor fitness of his team.

"This team needed to have played friendly matches to assess their fitness level but this did not happen. Now I have to work on that.

"To be honest, we have a bunch of talented players in the team, but if they are not fit, they cannot achieve anything."

His plans to bring up the fitness levels at the club have taken a further blow as Goal.com has reported that only 11 players showed up for training on Tuesday.

Many of the squad have been boycotting training throughout the pre-season over unpaid dues dating back to December last year.
