No surprises in final Kenya Sevens squad for Rio

18 July 2016, 20:17

Nairobi - There are no surprises in the Kenya Sevens men's squad for the Rio Games with the likes of Andrew Amonde and star player Collins Injera both included.

Sevens rugby will make its debut at the 2016 Olympics and Kenya have been paired with New Zealand, Great Britain and Japan in Pool C.

The team, though, have have set their sights high as they head into the Games in positive mood after they secured their maiden Cup victory in the IRB Sevens Series during the 2015-16 Singapore leg in April.

Head coach Benjamin Ayimba has named Amonde as his captain, but a lot will be expected of Injera, who became the top all-time try-scorer on the Sevens circuit in May this year.

Dennis Ombachi from Mwamba has also received the nod in the 12-man squad despite missing several months due to injury.

Ayimba will also coach the ladies team and Catherine Abila will skipper the Lionesses.

"The men’s and women’s teams will be run hand in hand as we go to Rio so that we can get the best of each," Ayimba told nation.co.ke.

He added: "The confidence levels are really high knowing we have provided the best training conditions and we have been able to concentrate a lot with no interruptions.

"For the men’s team, we have given ourselves the target of gold and for the women’s side a realistic target of getting to the quarter-finals so that it gives us a chance of getting into the HSBC World Series for the women."

The Lionesses are in Pool B with New Zealand, France and Spain.
