Kenyan athletes urged to avoid burnout

08 June 2016, 13:54

Nairobi - Athletics Kenya (AK) president Jack Tuwei says athletes need to be careful about signing up for too many European events during an Olympic year.

The likes of Asbel Kiprop, Conseslus Kipruto, Nicholas Kiproeach, Faith Kipyegon and Hyvin Jepkemoi have all started the 2016 IAAF Diamond League season well.

But while their performances have been impressive, there is the fear of burnout as the African Championships are coming up in South Africa from June 22-26 and that will be followed by the Kenyan trials from June 30-July 1 with the Rio Games set for August.

Tuwei admits AK would love to see the athletes compete at the Kenya trials and then follow it up with medal-winning displays at the Olympics, but he says they can't bar athletes from competing in the Diamond League.

"We are advising them individually and not as a group to weigh options and focus. We have told them to be responsible and watch their programme so as to avoid exhaustion before the Olympics," he is quoted as saying by the-star.co.ke.

"We allowed them to compete in races abroad and we want them to reciprocate by respecting our advises because our target is to see them perform well in Rio."

He added: "It will be sad for one to miss the Games just because you were busy trotting the Diamond League circuit."
