Kenyan athletes urged to avoid burnout

Nairobi - Athletics Kenya (AK) president Jack Tuwei says athletes need to be
careful about signing up for too many European events during an Olympic
The likes of Asbel Kiprop, Conseslus Kipruto, Nicholas Kiproeach,
Faith Kipyegon and Hyvin Jepkemoi have all started the 2016 IAAF Diamond
League season well.
But while their performances have been impressive, there is the fear
of burnout as the African Championships are coming up in South Africa
from June 22-26 and that will be followed by the Kenyan trials from June
30-July 1 with the Rio Games set for August.
Tuwei admits AK would love to see the athletes compete at the Kenya
trials and then follow it up with medal-winning displays at the
Olympics, but he says they can't bar athletes from competing in the
"We are advising them individually and not as a group to weigh
options and focus. We have told them to be responsible and watch their
programme so as to avoid exhaustion before the Olympics," he is quoted
as saying by the-star.co.ke.
"We allowed them to compete in races abroad and we want them to
reciprocate by respecting our advises because our target is to see them
perform well in Rio."
He added: "It will be sad for one to miss the Games just because you were busy trotting the Diamond League circuit."
