Nandi - The 2012 KASS International Marathon winner Weldon Kirui will defend his title during the 7th edition event scheduled for this Saturday at Nandi County.
Kirui said on Tuesday he has prepared well for the race and he is ready to break the jinx where champions have failed to defend their titles.
Kirui, who trains at Njerian athletics camp in Bomet County, said he will pull a first in the Kass race by becoming the only athlete to defend the title since its inception.
"There is this jinx that Kass Marathon always goes to a newcomer and I want to break it in Eldoret. I want to assure everyone that this year's Kass title will remain in South Rift courtesy of me," Kirui.
Kirui said he will feature in the event with 25 other athletes from Njerian training camp. He said he will not only be chasing the individual title but also the County title after the organizers introduced the category.
"It's good the organizers have created prizes for top athletes from different counties."
He said beside his intentions to defend the Kass title, he will also be aiming to lower his time of 2:17:00 during this year's race.
"I also have an intention to lower the time I used to win last year's Kass marathon and that I am working on by improving my speed through harder training," he said.
The marathon whose main goal is to discover and nurture talent is expected to host at least 5,000 runners from the large Rift Valley region.
The athletes will complete in the 42 km, 12km and 5km races. Kass Marathon is considered one of the unique races in the country as it takes place within the home of the athletes and brings together international heroes in an event that is homegrown.
