Uhuru's arrival in Moscow lifts athletes' spirits

Moscow - President Uhuru Kenyatta and First Lady Margaret Kenyatta arrived in Russia, on the day when Kenyan athlete Ezekiel Kemboi won his third 3,000 metres steeplechase world title in a remarkable style, at the 14th IAAF Championships taking place in Moscow.

On the date of his arrival, Team Kenya bagged her largest medal haul in the championships since they began on Saturday.

Ezekiel Kemboi, the defending champion in the 3,000 metres steeplechase made history as he successfully retained his world crown in the race, joining the elite class of athletes to have secured a world title while holding an Olympics gold.

Conseslus Kipruto secured Kenya’s third silver medal in Moscow as he finished second.

The third medal of the day for Team Kenya came through Hellen Obiri Onsando who braved a final 200 metre sprint to grab a bronze at the blue-tartan Luzhniki stadium.

President Uhuru's arrival has raised the spirits at the Team Kenya camp.

The plane carrying the President and his entourage landed at Domodedovo International airport shortly before 11:00 p.m. local time.

So far, the Kenyan team has bagged 3 gold medals, 3 silver medals and 2 bronze medals.

While in Moscow, President Kenyatta will hold discussions with business leaders to chart the best way forward to enhance trade links between the two countries.

On arrival President Kenyatta was received by African ambassadors representing their country in Russia, led by Kenya’s Ambassador to Russia Paul Kurgat.
