01 October 2014, 19:32

Nairobi - The Kenya squad to the opening round of the 2014/2015 HSBC Sevens World Series, the Gold Coast Sevens has been announced.

Head Coach Paul Treu has named a squad that sees Andrew Amonde retain the captaincy. He has also included five other players with previous series appearances, namely Fabian Olando, Davis Chenge, Max Theuri, Cyprian Kuto and Leonard Mugaisi while handing series debuts to Oliver Mang’eni, Bush Mwale, Michael Wanjala “ Junior”, Augustine Lugonzo, Alex Olaba and Jacob Ojee.

Ojee was the top try scorer and most valuable player at the recently concluded Safaricom Sevens Series which doubles up as the Kenya Club Sevens Champions while Lugonzo was top points scorer in the same competition. Olaba featured for Kenya at the recent Youth Olympics Rugby Sevens Competition in Nanjing, China.

Speaking to the Kenya Rugby Union about his selection, Treu said, “We have managed to select a young, but exciting mix of players from the recently concluded Safaricom Series and the Safaricom 7s tournament. As we are heading into the Olympic Qualifying season, we are under no illusion that it will be a massive challenge for our young players to firstly find their feet and secondly, to keep striving for excellence.”
