09 January 2012, 14:51
A tough seventh stage brought to an end the first half of the 2012
Dakar Rally, with only 66% of the competitors having completed the stage
Only 66 of the 124 cars (53%) and 28 of the 71 trucks (39%) managed
their way back. The rest were expected to be fighting through the
night, and some well into Sunday, to get back to the bivouac.
With a very fast 154km first special stage section on rough gravel
roads and across flat desert tracks, followed by a 225km second
special stage section across massive dunes, competitors finished the
first week in Copiapó on the South American west coast of Chile.
