Nairobi - Fans welcomed the marathon team Athletics Kenya (AK) selected to represent the country at the 2014 Commonwealth Games Marathon to be contested in Glasgow, Scotland later this year.
The games will be held from July 23 to August 3.
The athletics body announced a lineup of 13 experienced athletes AK believes will win medals.
In the women's team, double world champion Ednah Kiplagat will spearhead the team with another world record holder in the World Half Marathon race, Florence Kiplagat.
Among other enterprising women selected to represent the country comprise Caroline Cheptanui Kilel, Jemimah Jelagat Sumgong, Flomena Chepchirchir and Margaret Agai andSharon Cherop.
In the men's team, AK Kenya picked Bernard Koech, Sammy Kitwara, Wilson Kwambai Chebet, Mark Kosgei Kiptoo, Eliud Kipchoge and Vincent Kipruto to run in Scotland.
Among the powerful athletics men, Kipchoge's magic touch in 10 - 000m Commonwealth Games held in Delhi, India as well as the 5 000m silver accolade clinched in Germany are the trump-cards for Kenya.
“I strongly believe that both men and women's selected participants are the best ever teams Athletics Kenya has given the nation. We only pray that they fly out to get the gold medals in Scotland. I have no doubt, both men and women in the teams will do it for Kenya," Liza Kiptoo said.
Echoing the same sentiments was Shelton Okpra, who applauded the AK for taking its time to select a balanced and capable team.
“I call both men and women athletes selected 'Team Kenya' because they truly reflect the spirit of the nation. Kenya might have many capable, who could have gone unnoticed, but this is the best ever selection I believe every Kenyan would support,” Okpara said.
Athletics Kenya's Public Relations Officer, Evans Bosire, confirmed that all the selected athletes expressed interest to represent their country in the Commonwealth Games.
