Telkom Orange start defence of Afro hockey crown

24 November 2014, 12:31

Nairobi - Champions Orange Telkom started their African hockey Cup of Club championships campaign with a 7-0 hammering of Shams of Egypt 7-0 at the Khumalo Hockey Stadium in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, on Saturday.

The African Queens pinned the Egyptians in their own half for most of the match and made no slip-ups in defence.

Orange coach Jos Openda was satisfied with the win but insisted his team could have scored more goals and that they would have to make some improvements ahead of their next match.

The Kenyan team next take-on hosts Bulawayo Athletics Club in their Pool A fixture.

Against their Egyptian counterparts it took only two minutes for Lilian Aura to open the scoring.

The second goal was scored in the 19th minute by Terry Juma while Hellen Chemtai added the third in the 21st minute.

Aura, who had missed chances, gave Orange a 4-0 advantage in the 31st minute.

Captain Betsy Omala sent the ball home from a penalty corner in the 43rd minute while Barbara Simiyu converted another short corner six minutes later.
