Telkom Orange eye AFCON hockey glory, World cup ticket

09 January 2014, 14:30

Nairobi -  African women hockey champions, Telkom Orange are eyeing a ticket to the 2015 World Club Championships at the Hague, Netherlands as they embark on the defense of their crown in Uganda.

The team departed Nairobi for Kampala on Wednesday with an unchanged squad that bagged the continental crown last year with Strathmore University the other Kenyan side in the 25-team event.

Speaking on Wednesday, Jos Openda, the team's head coach assured his charges were raring to go and retain their crown after clinching the domestic league title last season.

"I told my players being No. 1 is easy but retaining the spot is a big issue. People are talking about dethroning us, Strathmore, Ghanaians and Nigerians included," said the coach.

"I believe all the teams are going to be a threat but we are prepared since we are not going to let it go easily. I have not changed my squad, the ladies that won the trophy in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, are still ready to deliver and these are the people we are taking along with in Uganda," Openda noted.

Captain Betsy Omala called on Kenyans to travel along with the team to give them the motivation to qualify for the global showpiece.

"We are set to go and the hard work we have put on the pitch will pay. I know Ghana fear us and it's evident since we are the champions," she added.

The squad received a timely lift when sponsors, communications firm Telkom Orange, presented them with 50,470 US dollars to cater for the continental campaign.
