10 October 2014, 14:50

Nairobi - The 2014 edition of the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon has received a new Sh172million sponsorship.

After the main sponsor released funds of approximately Sh90million, 11 other corporate have bolstered the total sponsorship with another Sh80.55million, it was announced on Thursday by race organisers.

Peter Gitau, the organising committee chairman, received sponsorship of Sh25 million from Majestics Printing Works and Sh21 million from G4S Security Company during a meeting with the sponsors at a Nairobi hotel on Thursday.

Also present at the meeting were representatives of Jubilee Insurance - who contributed Sh7.5m - while Alpine Coolers, PesaPal, Access Kenya and Nakumatt Holdings each added Sh6m to the purse.

Parapet Cleaning Services contributed Sh12m, AAR Sh1m, Subaru Kenya Sh500,000 and Greenloop International Sh350,000.

"Your contributions make it possible for us to continuously improve the marathon every year. If more sponsors come on board, I guarantee you the Nairobi marathon will undisputedly rival the likes of the London, Berlin and Boston marathons," Gitau said.

This year’s race target is to raise Sh25m for charity after a total of Sh23.09m was contributed in 2013.
