Nairobi - Safaricom has committed KES 80 million in sponsorship for this year’s Safaricom Athletics Series to ensure Kenya was all-conquering in the short distance competitions as it was in the marathons.
The annual racing event is scheduled to begin on March 22 with preliminary relay trials in Nairobi.
The relay trials will be held in order to select a team that will participate in the May 2014 World Relay Championships which will be held in The Bahamas later this year.
Safaricom Chief Executive Officer, Bob Collymore, speaking during the launch, said that the sponsorship will also support Deaf Athletics Association of Kenya (DAAK) Marathon under the series to be held in Kisumu.
This, he said, would be the first marathon of its kind in the country.
Collymore said Safaricom, which has been sponsoring races such as the Kass Marathon and Kapenguria Peace Race had decided to sponsor short-distance races in order to grow talent in the area.
“We feel it is important to include the short races in the series to give all existing and upcoming athletes a platform to discover and grow their talent in short races,” he said.
Collymore, who was launching the second edition of Safaricom Athletics Series, added that Kenya was well known to perform well in long distance races but the short races segment had not been fully exploited.
He expressed optimism in the country’s performance in that version of athletics.
