Rugby tourney organisers wary of security

09 October 2013, 16:05

Nairobi - Impala Rugby Football, the organizers of this weekend's Kenya Cup, are concerned about the security situation ahead of the tournament.

The tournament will come a few weeks after more than 60 people were killed during a terror attack in Nairobi. The Al Shabaab claimed responsibility for the massacre amid fears of a recurrence of such attacks.

“The issue of security is a major concern. We  have discussed the issue with police, who have pledged to put in place strong measures to ensure all the participants are looked after during this event," Impala chairman, Oduor Gangla, said.

Gangla nonetheless urged rugby followers to turn out in numbers to back their teams.

He pledged the club's preparedness to host the event.

Last season, poor lighting was a major issue.

The tournament, which is scheduled to be played over three weekends, will feature 14 teams.
