Rugby teams to turn the tables on Uganda

17 July 2014, 16:15

Nairobi - The Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) is confident the country’s A-side will overcome the deficit suffered in the first leg away in Uganda to win the Elgon Cup.

The two rivals meet in what will be a finely poised fixture scheduled for RFUEA Grounds in Nairobi on Saturday with Uganda’s Rugby Cranes in the lead.

Uganda recorded a 21-14 home result over a Kenya "A" and would thus be hard pressed to avoid defeat in the Kenyan capital if they are to lift a first Elgon Cup since 2012.

KRU, in spite of what looks like a massive gap, was confident the cup would remain in Kenya for another year on aggregate.

“It will also vindicate the Kenya Rugby Union's decision to rest their first string squad who recently placed third at the recent C.A.R Cup/ Rugby World Cup qualifiers in Madagascar. This match will be the top bill of a three match fixture at the RFUEA Grounds on Saturday 19 July 2014” the rugby governing body stated.

Meanwhile, the women’s team appears headed for a walk in the park unlike their male counterparts.

Kenya's Lionesses hold a massive 18 point advantage against Uganda's Lady Cranes heading into the return match on Saturday.

“The 33-15 win away to the defending champions put the Lionesses in good stead to reclaim the cross-border bragging rights and they will be well aware of the task at hand when they step out on to the RFUEA turf at 2 00pm on Saturday afternoon,” KRU stated.

The junior males, like their senior counterparts, will start their campaign on a back foot.

“Kenya's U-19s trail their Ugandan counterparts 15-10 heading into the return leg of the inaugural U-19 competition and  will have to fire on all cylinders and win by six or more points to claim the Elgon Cup's U-19 title,” stated KRU.

The Kenyan squads will be announced today (Thursday) at the RFUEA Grounds.
