Rousing welcome for London Marathon stars

16 April 2014, 10:32

Nairobi - New London Marathon winners, Wilson Kipsang and Edna Kiplagat, received a red carpet’s welcome as they returned home after winning the marathon.

The new record-holder of the prestigious event, Kipsang, arrived alongside Kiplagat and female runner-up Florence Kiplagat in Nairobi.

Ironically, they all hail from Elgeyo Marakwet County.

The trio, alongside the First Lady Margaret Kenyatta, who lined up for her Beyond Zero campaign, will be honoured for raising the country's flag high at the international marathon races.

Elgeyo Marakwet Governor, Alex Tolgos, announced that a date will be set to properly honour the trio for making the country proud at the London Marathon.

“The county is planning a ceremony to thank the athletes for putting the county on the world map,” Tolgos said.

Echoing same sentiments about the forthcoming ceremony, Elgeyo Marakwet County sports executive, Shadrack Yatich, said a party has been planned for Iten.

“As soon as we get the logistics from committees organising parties for Edna, Florence and Wilson, we will fix the date,” said Yatich.
