03 February 2014, 14:35
Nairobi - Lunch Bar Quins leapfrogged Strathmore Leos into third place with a
22-10 win over visiting Mwamba RFC in a rescheduled Kenya Cup fixture at
the RFUEA Grounds on Saturday 1 February 2014. The hosts went 10-0 up
inside the opening five minutes courtesy of quickfire tries from Tony
Mutai and Arthur Ochieng' before the game's tempo slowed down, Mwamba
finally able to get possession with Lavin Asego pulling the strings.
They would make inroads and scored from a Brian Kivasya penalty that cut
the deficit to 10-3.
The game would be characterized by a
series of errors, decision making and ball handling proving too tall a
task for both sides on several occasion.
Mark Okwaro's storming run gained Mwamba
good ground but his final delivery was gathered by Quins fullback
Sidney Ashioya who ran 70 meters to score at the corner, the scores 15-3
to the hosts. Dennis Muhanji would land Quins bonus try, pouncing on
another Mwamba error and racing clear to score under the posts. Eden
Agero slotted home the conversion for a 22-3 Quins lead at the break.
It was more of the same when the second
half resumed, errors characterizing the opening quarter. Mwamba would
lose the influential Lavin Asego through injury but his replacement
Shaban Ahmed acquitted himself well, his spadework setting up Kivasya
who grounded for a Mwamba try and conversion, the scores 22-10 at this
Tempers would soon flare, both sets of
players involved in a scuffle, probably as a result of the emotional
pressure that comes along with fight for a playoff berth. Center referee
Andre Karani would soon restore order, issuing a yellow card to
diminutive Quins number eight Brian Okwomi.
Mwamba would play with their tails up,
looking to put more points on the board but ran out of time, Karani
blowing the final whistle, a victory for Quins that extinguished
Mwamba's playoff hopes.
The full compliment of league matches resumes next weekend.
