Provisional 40 man Kenya rugby squad for Vodacom Cup named

28 January 2014, 12:43

Nairobi - Kenya Head Coach Jerome Paarwater named a 40 man squad that will go into training in preparation for the 2014 Vodacom Cup which the Rugby Lions will use to prepare for their C.A.R Cup defense and qualification for the 2015 Rugby World Cup in England.

This year's C.A.R Cup will be held in Madagsacar between June 28 and July 5 and will serve as the final round of qualifying for the Rugby World Cup 2015 in England. The squad was selected after a series of trials held this weekend.

Speaking at the Barclays Sports Club, Paarwater said, " It's not just about what we have done over the last three days...it is a culmination of what we have done over the last two and half years in terms of preparation. If the Kenya Rugby Union wasn't serious about fifteens rugby...we wouldn't have done everything with the guys in terms of preparation."

"We all know that the sevens team has put Kenya on the map but the vision that the Chairman has is to ensure that the fifteens team is up and running. A big part of rugby in Kenya is fifteens rugby, everybody loves fifteens rugby."

"It's a great vision that the Chairman and board has, to prepare for the World Cup. Things just didn't happen last year...going to Madagascar and winning the Africa Cup...we started the preparations quite early. We are now taking it a step further in going to South Africa to prepare for the Vodacom Cup. I know the Vodacom Cup is a strong competition and it is a big part of our preparation to go down and prepare. We have to do something special to prepare and for us it is playing in the Vodacom Cup. "
