Nairobi - Preparations for next week's World Indoor Championship set for Sopot in Scotland are at an advanced stage with the country sending a high powered long distance running squads for both men and women.
The World Indoor Championship is organised by International Athletics Association Federation (IAAF) and is due to take place between next Friday and Sunday.
Kenya is sending a strong five-man squad as well as a three-woman team to compete in Scotland.
Defending champion Helen Obiri will lead the women’s delegation to Sopot to compete in two crucial races for 1 500m and 3 000m, where the squad is tipped to make a clean sweep of accolades.
Obiri and Irene Jelagat will represent the country in their traditional 3 000-metre race while Viola Kibiwot will be the sole contestant for Kenya in the 1 500m.
On the other hand, their male counterparts, led by the 2011 Indoor World Championships medalist, Augustine Choge, will be motivated by the availability of champion Jeremiah Mutai, who will compete in the men's 800m with Bethwell Birgen and Silas Kiplagat while Augustine Choge and Caleb Ndiku will represent the country in the 3 000m marathon.
Athletics Kenya has praised the eight-member athletic squad and was hopeful it would return home with medals.
